Sunlight in the Home

We have had so much rain this year. The sky has been cloudy more often than not where I live. In fact it seems that it has rained nearly everyday for the last two weeks! So, when the sunshine came out this afternoon, even briefly, it was such a welcome sight! This evening I picked up the book Counsels on Health which I have been reading and came across the following statement. It rang so true I had to share!

If you would have your homes sweet and inviting, make them bright with air and sunshine. Remove your heavy curtains, open the windows, throw back the blins, and enjoy the rich sunlight, even if it be at the expense of your carpets. The precious sunlight may fade your carpets, but it will give a healthful color to the cheeks of your children. If you have God’s presence and possess earnest, loving hearts, a himble home, made bright with air and sunlight, and cheerful with the welcome of unselfish hospitality, will be to your family and the weary traveler a heaven below.

This is so true. But there can be many reasons we keep our curtains closed. I remember years back I was struggling emotionally and the way I was handling situations wasn’t the way I normally function. Something wasn’t right. I cam to realise that in order to make my airconditioning more efficient I was keeping my curtains closed. So I started to move my curtains with the sun. When the sun came in the east the curtains were down that side, when the sun came in the west, the east side went up and the west side came down. It was amazing the difference this made to me.
Another aspect, than the one mentioned in this quote, that helps us, is being able to see past the wall – to see a living plant, to see the energy of the sun, to see the occasional bird.

I love having sunshine pouring into my home….I dread those gloomy, cloudy days where the house is dark and makes me want to sleep! But as I read this article, I realized that even when it’s cloudy outside, we can still have joy and peace inside, thus filling our home with sunshine of a differant kind…..joy! I have read this article before but needed it today, and I was so glad to have read it!!
