More Nature Stories
Nature is all around us. Yes, everywhere we look we find something to watch and learn about. This evening, as the Sabbath was coming to an end, my four little girls and I were outside as we often are at dusk. As the sun is sinking below the horizon, it is the perfect time to spy the little bats flying around our yard.
We sat down on the picnic table and were chatting and watching when all of a sudden Laura looks up and crys out, “A bat just flew out of the house!” If you will remember with me, just a few weeks ago we found two bats inside of our house crawling across the carpet on two different nights. We rather like bats, so this was not too concerning to us.
Well, sure enough, we spent the next 10 or 15 minutes with our eyes glued to the upper portion of our house just above the garage. I counted 17 bats flying out of the three holes in the attic above our garage. Who knows how many I didn’t see! So, the mystery of where the two bats came from has been solved. We definitely have bats living in our attic!
Now, if that weren’t exciting enough, about 10 days ago, I was walking outside of Food City with Hannah and Laura when Hannah spied yet another Luna Moth sleeping on the window of the store. She picked it up and took it home. We then placed it in a critter container and later took it to VBS to share with the children there. We love finding Luna Moths! They are so special.
Anyway, later that evening we noticed that we again had Luna Moth eggs in our container! How awesome is that? Well, this morning as we were leaving for church we checked our little eggs… and we have babies!
You can see some of the little brown eggs in the photo below and lots of tiny little Luna Moth caterpillars. Aren’t they so cute!
You can see they are happily munching on some Hickory leaves. Here is a photo of what these little guys will grow up to be:
Amazing, huh! I will share more photos as they grow. I have been praying for these caterpillars. We really want to successfully raise them! We are leaving in the morning on a trip to Indian Creek Camp (close to Nashville). The Luna Moth caterpillars, Praying Mantis, the Fowler’s Toad are all traveling with us. I believe the snakes will be okay for three days without us.
Shhh. We aren’t supposed to bring pets! Do you think bugs count???
